CLASSIFICATION OF NERVE INJURIES
- Neuropraxia - Conduction loss without structural change of the axon. Recovery takes place within days or weeks after the removal of the cause.
- Axonotmesis - The axons lose continuity, with subsequent
wallerian degeneration along the distal segment. Recovery is dependent on
regeneration of the nerve fibers. This process takes several months to several years.
- Neurotmesis - This injury separates the entire nerve, including the supporting tissue. Without surgical intervention, regeneration is slow, resulting in incomplete and poorly organized repair. This classifacation covers penetrating wounds as well as compressive neuropathies in advanced stages.
